In-Home Design Session
This is where it all begins
Our In-Home Design Session is a focused, design-led service for homeowners who are thinking about extending, remodelling or improving their home, but are not yet sure what the right answer is.
You may know that your house no longer works as well as it should. Perhaps the kitchen feels disconnected from the garden, the ground floor layout is awkward, the entrance does not work, or the house needs to support a new stage of family life. You may already have ideas, or you may simply know that something needs to change.
The purpose of this session is to bring clarity before you commit to a full architectural design process.
We spend time with you in your home, understand how you live, review the opportunities and constraints, and begin testing ideas through conversation and sketch design. The result is a clearer sense of what is possible, what is worth pursuing and what may be better rethought before time and money are spent in the wrong direction.
Why start with an In-Home Design Session?
Successful home projects begin long before a planning application is submitted.
Good design is about more than simply adding space. Often, the greatest opportunities can be found by improving flow, natural light, storage, privacy, views, connection to the garden and the way each part of the house supports daily life.
For many homeowners, the hardest part is knowing where to start.
You may be asking:
Should we extend, remodel, or both?
Is our budget realistic for what we want to achieve?
What are the planning risks?
How much disruption are we taking on?
Could the same result be achieved in a simpler way?
Are we solving the right problem?
Our In-Home Design Session is designed to answer those early questions. It gives you professional architectural thinking at the point where it can make the biggest difference, before the project direction has become fixed.
What the session helps you clarify
By the end of the process, you should have a much clearer understanding of:
the best opportunities within your existing home
whether an extension is necessary, or whether the layout can work harder
how the house could be improved for light, flow, storage and everyday living
the likely planning route and any obvious constraints
how the project might be phased if you are not ready to do everything at once
where the main cost and buildability issues may arise
what information is needed before moving into full design work
the next steps
This is not about producing a finished design in one visit. It is about setting the right direction.
Who it is for
The In-Home Design Session is ideal if you are considering:
a rear, side or wraparound extension
remodelling the ground floor
opening up the kitchen and living spaces
improving the relationship between the house and garden
reworking the entrance, utility, boot room or family storage
adapting the house for a young or growing family
planning a phased renovation over several years
buying or recently moving into a home that needs improvement
testing whether your ideas are realistic before committing to full architectural fees
It is particularly useful where you have several competing ideas and need an experienced architect to help identify which route is likely to create the best home.

How it works
1. Initial call
We start with a short introductory call to understand the property, your aims, your timescales and the type of project you are considering.
This helps us confirm whether the In-Home Design Session is the right starting point and whether there are any obvious planning, budget or technical issues to be aware of.
2. Before the session
Before the visit, we ask you to send any useful information you already have. This may include estate agent plans, existing drawings, photographs, surveys, planning history or notes about what you would like to change.
We review this information ahead of the session so that our time in your home can be focused and productive.
3. The in-home session
The session is a focused half-day visit in your home, giving us the time to properly understand the property, explore ideas in depth and discuss the opportunities available to you.
We walk through the house with you, looking at how it works now, what feels awkward, where space is being underused and where the greatest opportunities may lie. We discuss how you live, what is changing, what matters most and what you want the project to achieve.
The session is deliberately hands-on and collaborative. Around the kitchen table, with pens, tracing paper and sketch plans spread out in front of us, we begin testing ideas together in real time. As conversations develop, layouts evolve on paper, options are explored and possibilities start to take shape there and then.
This may include testing different layouts, discussing planning constraints, considering likely construction implications and comparing the practical difference between one route and another.
This is often where the most useful discoveries happen. Sometimes the solution may not be to add more space, but to make the existing house work properly.
4. Follow-up Concept Pack
After the visit, we prepare a concise follow-up Concept Pack.
This gives you a written and visual record of the main ideas discussed, including simple sketch plans, key observations and recommended next steps.
The aim is to give you something tangible to review, share with family and use as a basis for deciding whether to move forward to the next stage.
Why it matters
A home project can involve significant investment, disruption and decision-making. Early design decisions have a major impact on cost, planning risk, buildability and the quality of the finished home.
Starting with an In-Home Design Session helps avoid false starts.
It allows you to test your assumptions, understand the real opportunities and begin the project with a clearer brief. It also gives us the opportunity to understand the house properly before recommending the right route forward.
The outcome should be a more confident client, a stronger brief and a better foundation for the full design process.
Why Graphene Architects?
At Graphene Architects, we design homes that feel effortless because the complexity has been resolved properly.
We bring together architectural design, planning experience and practical construction understanding. That means we are not only thinking about what looks good on paper. We are also thinking about how the design will be approved, priced, built and lived in.
Our work is focused on residential architecture in Richmond, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and the surrounding areas. We help homeowners unlock the potential of their homes through careful design, clear thinking and a realistic understanding of the journey from first idea to completion.
The In-Home Design Session is the starting point for that process.
